Picoides arcticus

"Black-backed Woodpecker"

District Municipality of Muskoka, Dwight Beach Rd - Jan. 25, 1999

This is a photograph of one of the two Black-backed Woodpeckers found by Robin Tapley on a white pine at the west end of the brown fence in front of house 1230. They were working in a diagonal line about 12 feet up from the base of the tree on the side facing the road. They were also working behind the church on the white pine tree closest to the fence.
It is unusual to find this species foraging in pines, typically they are seen scaling the bark of tamarack or fir trees, occasionally on hemlock.
